PMS Punjab 2020 Solved Precis

PMS Punjab 2020 Solved Precis

People moan about poverty as a great evil; and it seems to be an accepted belief that if people only had plenty of money, they would be happy and useful and get more out of life. As a rule, there is more genuine satisfaction in life and more obtained from life in the humble cottage of the poor man than in the palaces of the rich. I always pity the sons and daughters of rich men, who are attended by servants, and have governesses at a later age, at the same time I am glad to think that they do not know what they have missed.

It is because I know how sweet and happy and pure the home of honest poverty is, how free from perplexing care and social envies and jealousies-how loving and united its members are in the common interest of supporting the family that I sympathize with the rich man's boy and congratulate the poor man's son. It is for these reasons that from the ranks of the poor so many strong, eminent, self-reliant men have always sprung and always must spring. If you will read the list of the "immortals who were not born to die you will find that most of them have been born poor.

It seems nowadays a matter of universal desire that poverty should be abolished. We should be quite willing to abolish luxury, but to abolish hones, industrious, self-denying poverty would be to destroy the soil upon which mankind produces the virtues that will enable our race to reach a still higher civilization than it now possesses.

Important Ideas of the Passage

In this passage, the author aims to persuade readers that poverty is a source of happiness, character, and achievement, not an evil. Moreover, he also warns that abolishing honest poverty would harm humanity.

Main Idea of the Passage

  • Honest poverty as a source of contentment, strength, and virtue
    • Poverty is not the evil it is assumed to be, because poor homes give more real satisfaction and produce stronger, more self-reliant people than wealth does, so abolishing honest poverty would destroy the source of human virtue.

Supporting Ideas Helping the Main Idea

  • The mistaken belief that wealth brings happiness
    • Poverty is wrongly regarded as a serious misfortune, since people assume wealth would make them happier and more useful.
  • More real satisfaction in poor households
    • In reality, poor households give more real satisfaction than rich ones.
  • The happy, united home of honest poverty
    • The home of honest poverty is happy, pure, and united in supporting the family, which makes the poor man’s child fortunate.
  • Eminent people born poor
    • Such homes produce many strong, eminent, self-reliant people; indeed, most famous figures were born poor.
  • Abolishing poverty equivalent to destroying the source of virtue
    • Though many now wish poverty abolished, abolishing honest, industrious poverty would destroy the source of human virtue.

Precis

Precis 1

Poverty is wrongly treated as a curse, since people assume wealth would make them happier and more useful. Poor households, however, offer more real contentment than rich ones: a poor family’s home is happy, pure and close-knit, so those raised there are fortunate. Such homes produce many resilient, self-reliant individuals. Indeed, most famous figures began poor. Abolishing poverty of the honest, hardworking kind, as many now wish, would destroy the source of human virtue.

Precis 2

Although wealth is widely assumed to bring happiness and usefulness, poor households actually yield greater contentment. Hardworking families bound by a common aim of self-support make homes that are warm and wholesome, a fortunate start for their children. Such upbringings explain why distinguished, capable and self-sufficient individuals have so often emerged from humble beginnings. Eliminating poverty borne with honesty and industry, however widespread the aim, would erase the very origin of human goodness.

  • Title: The Overlooked Contentment of Poor Households

Precis 3

Poverty, far from the calamity it is assumed to be, nurtures richer lives than affluence does, the poor household offering deeper contentment. Homes made happy and wholesome by shared effort to support the family give rise to so many resilient, distinguished figures, most celebrated names being of humble birth. The widespread wish to eradicate honest, industrious poverty would, if realised, deprive humanity of the very source of its virtue.
